The remote Península de Osa, a region of southeast Costa Rica that curves out into the Pacific Ocean, is an extraordinary strip of land belonging to an equally extraordinary country.
Described by National Geographic as ‘the most biologically intense place in the world’, it is considered by many to be the diamond in the crown of the nation with the greatest biodiversity on the planet. In fact, Costa Rica’s concentrated and extended area of tropical rainforest offers animal and plant species a habitat protected by a system of national parks. With the ‘green revolution’, the people of Costa Rica have achieved a high standard of living and the nation’s ecologically minded politics have earned President Oscar Arias a Nobel Peace Prize.

Inserted between the Rio Sierpe and the Parque Nacional Corcovado, Bahía Drake (Drake Bay) is the point from which the Isla del Caño located 19 km from the coast can be reached. Declared a Reserva Biológica (Biological Reserve) in 1978, Isla del Caño has an one of the best preserved ecosystems on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and is comparable to the coral reefs of Panamá, Columbia, and the Galapagos Islands. It is not uncommon that during the crossing one encounters pods of dolphins of 25 different species or witnesses the incredible jumps of the humpback whales that travel through these waters during migration. Here the whale watching season is the longest in the world; the whales can be seen every month of the year but May, although they are in their greatest numbers from the end of July to the beginning of November.
Most of the lodges located along Bahía Drake organize daily boat tours that offer snorkelling and scuba diving as well as a stop for lunch on the island.
On the way back, on Bahía Drake’s little beaches of black sand one can hear the incredibly colourful macaws making their presence known with the typical high-pitched and guttural sounds that allow them to be found among the dense foliage of the trees. It is possible to go on excursions to the nearby Parque Nacional Corcovado or night walks through the forest in search of insects, frogs, and nocturnal animals.
In the town of Sierpe, the recently opened Cabinas Mozelle lodge is immersed within the peninsula’s dense vegetation. Looking out from the hotel’s raised terrace, one can identify various species of birds, squirrels, and other forest dwellers, and the elderly American woman who runs the establishment is a bird watching expert. The charming walk to the touristic centre of town winds along an unpaved road surrounded by tall coconut palms and is characterized by the presence of capuchin monkeys and iguanas that peek out from the treetops. The most common means of transport is the bicycle, which keeps the lazy from having to get around on foot in the humid heat and helps avoid getting sweaty, which can happen even after sundown! One should not forget that Costa Rica is located only 8° above the equator.

Incastonata tra il Rio Sierpe e il Parque Nacional Corcovado, Bahía Drake è la porta d’accesso per raggiungere la Isla del Caño, situata al largo a 19 km dalla costa nell’Oceano Pacifico. Dichiarata Reserva Biológica nel 1978, Isla del Caño presenta un ecosistema tra i meglio conservati del versante Pacifico della Costa Rica comparabile alle barriere coralline di Panamá, Colombia e Isole Galápagos. Non è raro durante la traversata imbattersi in gruppi di delfini di circa 25 specie diverse ed assistere agli spettacolari salti delle balene megattere che solcano queste acque durante le loro migrazioni. E’ la stagione del whale watching più lunga al mondo; le balene possono essere avvistate durante tutti i mesi dell’anno, eccetto maggio, anche se la maggior concentrazione dei cetacei va dalla fine di luglio all’inizio di novembre.
La maggior parte dei lodge disseminati su Bahía Drake organizza tour giornalieri in barca di snorkeling e immersioni subacquee con sosta sull’isola per il pranzo.
Al ritorno, sulle spiaggette di sabbia nera di Bahía Drake, coloratissimi ara macao annunciano la loro presenza con i classici versi acuti e gutturali che permettono di identificarli tra il fitto fogliame degli alberi. È possibile effettuare escursioni al vicino Parque Nacional Corcovado e i night tour, camminate nella foresta circostante alla scoperta di insetti, rane e animali notturni.
A Sierpe il lodge Cabinas Mozelle, recentemente inaugurato, è immerso nella fitta vegetazione. Dal terrazzo sopraelevato è possibile identificare varie specie di uccelli, scoiattoli e altri animali della foresta. La vecchia signora americana che lo gestisce è un’esperta di bird watching. La piacevole passeggiata che conduce al “centro turistico” del paese, si snoda lungo una stradina sterrata circondata da alte palme da cocco ed è caratterizzata dalla presenza di scimmie cebo cappuccino e iguane, che fanno capolino tra le foglie. Il mezzo di trasporto più diffuso è la bicicletta, che risparmia ai più pigri la fatica di girare a piedi in un caldo umido irrespirabile e inondati di sudore anche dopo il tramonto! Non va dimenticato che la Costa Rica è situata a 8° sopra l’Equatore.
